by south korea and the u.s. in the sea of japan and the yellow sea. >>> a strong typhoon is approaching southern china. this follows tropical storm conson that hit just last week. we now go to saki ochi from the weather desk with the latest information. >> we have been keeping an eye on the storm system. it's been gradually strengthening in the past 24 hours. it's now a strong typhoon with wind speeds well over 120 kilometers per hour and gusts much, much stronger. right now hainan island, parts of guangdong province already feeling the effects of those strong winds, and they will likely get stronger as the core of the system approaches in the next couple of hours. after that it is expected to head in toward northern vietnam. so all this area will be looking at those winds to get stronger. and of course there will be the rain. plenty of moisture associated with this system. heavy rains have been starting to fall across hainan island and parts of coastal china. that will then head in toward the hanoi region of northern vietnam. so really, a lot more rains to fall in the next couple of da

. this is a major source of hostility to isaf and u.s. forces. >>> u.s. and south korean war sxhpz helicopters are carrying out maneuvers off the korean peninsula. the media was shown some of the exercises on monday. on the second day of the four-day drill, earl morning aircraft staged takeoffs and landings on the "uss george washington." refueling activities were also shown. the large scale war game involves 200 aircraft and submarines. it focuses on detecting submarines and destroying torpedos in the event of an enemy attack. the exercise is apparently a warning to north korea in the wake of the sinking of a south korean naval ship in march. north korea strongly protested against the exercise and threatened to counter with a nuclear test. >>> japanese scientists say they have found a safer way to create a type of human stem cell known as ips. it has the potential to develop into any tissue or organ. ips cells are generated by introducing three or four different genes to human somatic cells, but one of those genes is believed to be potentially cancerous. a team of kyoto university researchers

on friday morning on investor jitters over the u.s. economic outlook. the nikkei 225 closed the morning session at 9,550 points, down 1.5%, or 146 ticks almost. sell orders dominated due to the strength of the yen, and on the weakness of new york shares. some electronics and automotive shares bucked the trend on the back of robust earnings reports. to currencies, on the tokyo foreign exchange the dollar is losing ground against the yen on friday morning. the greenback is currently changing hands at 86.47-51. investors took their cue from the dollar's overnight losses in other markets. contributing to the fall was the downgrade by the u.s. federal reserve of its economic assessment for some districts, dampening america's recovery outlook. concerns over ballooning u.s. fiscal deficits are also weighing down on the dollar. >>> and here's a look at the latest long-term interest rates. this is the yield on the benchmark ten-year japanese government bond. in other asian markets, hong kong's hang seng opened down 0.4%. it's currently down 0.2%, slightly recovered here. the shanghai key index f
